Santa Muerte (Spanish for Holy Death or Sacred Death), is a female folk saint venerated primarily in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. A personification of death, she is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. This figuration of the Holy Death Saint is based of Michelangelo’s La Pieta masterpiece depicting Mary cradling the peaceful body of Christ after the Crucifixion. As an image of abandonment to God – la Pieta mirrors the devotion of Santa Muertistas and Muerteros who find in Saint Death freedom from the struggles they face in life. The figuration of this Holy Death will always be seated, holding a human being on her legs and carrying it. One of her hands will be holding his body and with the other hand part of his legs. She will always be dressed in her mantle and her head raised up a little always looking forward and upward like asking for a fair trial or judgment and benevolence from the Creator for her devotees. People who come to have a Holy Death of this type grant them spiritual peace, abundance and harmony.
